Viscous friction

Add drag linear in velocity, classify free regimes, and extend the dynamic-form acceleration f1f_1. Pick each equation among lookalikes.

RegimeConditionMotion
Underdampedb<2mω0b < 2m\omega_0decaying oscillation
Criticalb=2mω0b = 2m\omega_0fastest non-oscillatory return
Overdampedb>2mω0b > 2m\omega_0slow creep, no ringing

A harmonic drive F0cos⁡(ωt)F_0\cos(\omega t) produces a steady response peaked near ω0\omega_0 when damping is light. Transient + steady terms with nearby frequencies produce beats at ∣ω−ω0∣/(2π)|\omega-\omega_0|/(2\pi) (labs: ω=2π⋅1.1\omega=2\pi\cdot 1.1, ω0=2π\omega_0=2\pi ⇒ 0.10.1). Nonlinear restoring forces warp the resonance curve once linear friction/drive is under control.
